Velvet drive reversal?
I have a 30' Scarab II with bbc (standard) rotation hooked through the B/W trans, down to a set of TRS Drives. The port foot dropped a gear, and I was told by several different marine mechs, that there was no difference in the starboard or port gears in the foot. Well long story short, I had to put the port engine in rev to go go fwd! I have changed the "lefthanded" prop to a "righthanded" one. Now the boat goes fwd but doesn't handle near the same, and the steering is fighting to the starboard side. Can I change the rotation of the trans or foot and go back to my lefthanded prop on the port side? Without changing the foot or gears in the foot? Any help would be appreciated!

You can have the lower switched, housing & gears are the same. Differant prop shaft and 1 bearing if I remember correctly.
|
PS - you cannot do it in the trans

Like MBAM says, you would need to switch the propshaft. You cannot do it by reversing the trans. Also, by running the trans in reverse to go forward, you can very easily damage it. They are not meant to take alot of power in reverse.

they are correct in that the gears are the same. different propshaft and assembled differently. also I have trs drives or lowers for sale, cheap.

I think the confusion is that you can reverse a B/W tranny but only for a reverse rotation motor. It just fixes the fluid flow.

Thank-you. What exactly would I have to change in my lower unit to accomplish counter rotation? I still have my original foot, good shafts, good housing, bad pinion gears.
Or, does anybody want to trade my new setup for a counter rotation setup? And again, thanks for all the information! |

Thanks! I did'nt know that all I had to do was turn the gear around in the foot and use the extra bearing with the left hand shaft! I've had all of these parts, now maybe I can get it pointed in the right direction! I really appreciate the input and I am glad as heck I joined! Thankyou
