A Quick TRS Question?

A buddy and I were talking last night about the difference between the TRS and the Bravo.

I thought that on the TRS one motor actually ran backwards (Had a different cam to do so) and that is how you got the counter rotating drives? or is it the Drive?

I know that on a Bravo you can run them in either dirrection just as fast, meaning that if your props were turning in, then you could swap them to turn out and put the boat into reverse and run the boat (Then change the linkage)

TRS's change rotation in the drives, not the motors, just like a bravo.

I have a left and right drive, "L" stamped on prop shaft.

Both motors turn in regular rotation.

I heard that if you put your props on backwards you can put the trans in reverse and go foward.

You'll more then likely burn the clutchs out in the trans if you try that with any amt of power! :(

Don't run the tranny's in reverse under much power, you will blow out reverse for sure.

Don't run the trans in reverse you will blow the trans planetary gear. A friend of mine did it he didn't get a mile before it blew.

I believe they are reverse in the bottoms the tops are the same

Geras in the bullet

The TRS has a carrier in the front and rear of the prop shaft ..To make a lefty you have to pull the prop shaft , take the ring gear and swap it to the front ..Leave it to the pros unless you have the tools , pullers etc ...

Don't even THINK about messing with that TRS to change the rotation!!! Everything in the upper gearcase is the same with both L & R, but there is a LOT of different stuff in the lower starting with a completely different propshaft. You CANNOT just take it apart and just move the stuff you have around. Running under power in R. WILL blow your tranny. Merc also did some really funny stuff in the late 70's/early 80's; like putting a counter-rotating engine in front of a LH TRS drive and using a RH prop. Go figure!??! Also, be aware that Gear shimming and bearing preload of the components of your upper and lower units are interdependent and if you mess with one end you have to go through the whole thing. I've rebuilt a number of these when I was in the business and I would definitely put this in the "Don't try this at home" catagory!! Use LH props or take it to a pro for the changeover. Proceed carefully. --- Jer
