msd. vs. delco dist
Built 2 HP 500 moters can't deside weather to use msd or my delco stuff. Any input out their. Would like to have rev limiters when I'm airborne
|
If you still have the merc TB distributors you may want to just keep them. The MSD will rust out, I have seen many pictures. I have computer controlled timing and I use the Marine DUI distributor. The automotive distributors are not approved for marine use.

I agree, I run H/P HEI works great.....to many issues with the MSD's
|
What preventions can be made to keep it from rusting?
I have the billet msd distributer now. I dont see anything wrong yet, but only 2 seasons |
Have you taken them apart? They rust on the inside

buy a lottery ticket...

I have run the Marine grade MSD stuff for years and it all rusts and corrodes. Just replaced the distributor and the box. Their coils seem to hold up, but nothing else. But I still would not run anything else on the blower motors. I use to run magnetos, but they were a pain in rump, also.

what about these? no coil?
how do u set a rev limiter? |
nobody?

So im guessing there isnt any way to prevent corrosion from happening? |
With MSD you basically get a auto distrubutor with a flame arrester. No special parts, the merc distributors are very good. If I had not went with aftermarket timing control I would still be using it. I have been using the DUI for 2 full seasons and no corosion issues.

if you clear coat the internals on the MSD when it is new greatly helps with corrosion .....m

The coil is mounted in the center of the cap. They aren't bad, very simple. It's just the one you linked to from Jeg's is for a car. Not marine approved.
other then that they are 100% the same !:party-smiley-004: |
Look at these http://www.performancedistributors.com/marinedui.htm

For those who ask about protecting the inside of the MSD from rust an annual spray with CRC SP-400 long term corossion inhibitor will do great. I do not boat in salt water but I used this for several(7) years and it worked well. I did this in the Fall during winterization. Just remove the MSD cap and spray with a light coating of the spray. Wipe any dripping excess off. The only thing that seemed to still rust were the springs. You'll have to get this from Grainger or like company. It is mostly used in food industry machinery. Protect the box from voltage spikes with a capacitor and you will be good with the MSD. It just goes inline on the power wire to the box.

thats what I run...just get the vac advance eliminater kit, and they work awsome....also the HEI wire ends that plug right in, makes the install a snap...

u cant just block the vac line? |
or do they have mechanical advance?
|
I am by NO means an engine expert. But been seeing alot of crank trigger ignitions on cars the last couple of years. I think Eddie Young did something awhile ago too. To my knowlede these systems don't use a distributer at all. I'll see if I can find the thread from Young Performance.

I like how it performs too. Maybe a little WD before winter would do it good to keep the moisture out?? Thats what my old man suggested. I may try it and keep you posted on my corosion progress. |
