A Gen VI double roller timing set has quite a bit of setback in it. It is made to go back towards the block, where a MK IV/Gen V double roller is pretty straight. The Gen VI actually goes back in toward the block (if that makes sense) There is no way to get MK IV/Gen V double roller timing set to fit under a stock Gen VI cover. I have tried it. The only way will be with an aftermarket cover. The only one that I know of will be from IMCO. I'm still not sure if it will work though. I would give them a call and see if they know (1800-899-8058, talk to Rick)
Pretty much any retro-fit lifter will work in a Gen VI. As Jeffswave mentioned, just leave the Gen VI parts out (dogbones and spider hold down).
Picklen Jim, that's what Jeff was referring to. Not leaving off the tie bars on the retro lifters, but leaving out the Gen VI dogbones and spider if he uses the retro lifters from the Gen V.
I would stick with the Gen VI lifters if they will work. They are excellent pieces. You will have to check them though. Put the cam and a pair of lifters in. Turn the engine over and check to make sure the lifters neither go down to far to come out of the dogbone nor come up high enough to hit the dog bone and raise it up. If the lifter falls out the bottom of the dog bone, bad, bad things will happen.

Thanks for clearing that up Eddie. My mistake. For some reason when Jeff mentioned dogbones I was thinking tie bars as I have seen removable tie bars but they were on solids. Wasn't even thinking dogbones as these were retro lifters which no way could use a dogbone.

With gen V retro fit roller cam in gen VI block lifter tie bars clear the top of the lifter bosses,but as has been mentioned timing gears are the issue the set I have are for a gen V and have a roller thrust bearing which will not work on the gen VI it holds the cam out of the block to far and does not fit properly.I'll try a non thrust bearing timing set.Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the cam has to thrust on the back side of the top gear so it does not contact the cam plug in the back of the block?

It gets confusing when you try to mix and match parts for different Gen's. Most of the time you can make it work but it takes some knowledge. The Gen VI roller setup works great untill you get into higher lift cams. Then you need the retro lifters with tie bars. The timing chain compatibility issues seem to be the biggest problem.

Gen VI lifter bores are longer so if you use a gen VI block make sure you have the longer lifters no mater what style you use. Both are avalible. you can use a double roller timing chain also will just need to get a new cover. I just did this to my HP 500's. I used a Mallory Billet set with a torrington brg. and cam button, also the comp cams two peice timing cover. Just need to trim back corners of cover a little by water pump. real easy and works great. Hope that helps answer your questions.
