Questions about GPS Mount placement (fiberglass questions)
 

I am going attach my GPS mounting bracket in my boat and had a few questions for you guys. First off here is a picture of where I would really like to mount this thing. Only problem is that there is no wood backing behind the fiberglass so the only thing that would be holding the bracket is fiberglass. Is that ok or am I just asking for trouble (ie stress cracks)

Ok, heres my only other option. Mount it in the center of the dash and there is wood behind the fiberglass here but its not really where I wanted to mount this. We use this area as a step to get on the bow. Might still have room to still step there but ....

It appears to be a small hand held type GPS that you are mounting. It should be light enough in weight to not cause a problem at the prefered location. It is best to mount it where it can be used and seened the best. If you are concerned about the first location, just put a small piece of plywood under the fiberglass and run the bolts through both. I have done this with the heavy VHF antenna mounts and have not had a problem.

Yes it is a Handheld GPS mount. I plan on thru bolting the bracket to the boat instead of using the supplied screws. Good idea on the plywood!!

After you cut and drill plywood backing plate, coat it with epoxy resin.

While your at it, make backing plates for your cleats and eye bolts.

I used velcro for my gps mount, no holes at all that way and you can take it in your car when you want to...

if you are planning to use #10 screws (appx 3/16 diameter), then use a 1/4" drill bit and run it BACKWARDS rotation and drill thru the gelcoat (actually, spinning backwards you kinda "rub" thru the gelcoat). THEN drill thru the 'glass with the 3/16 bit. This will keep from chipping the gel around the hole and will prevent spider cracks from spreading out from the holes over time. Use the backing plate (plywood) for the screws to bite into (or use washers and nuts). You'll be fine.
