my NAPA store will get the 51060R Wix if I call ahead ....as stated they are a nice filter ....I have cut them open and very well made ....they do not have a bypass valve ...so if you run them a long time it could be an issue ...m

I just went thru this and the Mobil 1 filter I was given as a cross reference is M1-303. It appears the same as the Mercury filter I pulled off, gasket in same position, and the center threads are the same as it spins right onto the filter head. Are there that many filters that cross reference? This will be the third Mobil 1 filter part # in this thread.

Here is the tech info on the 2 filters according to Mobil 1 tech. M1-302... 3.77 diameter, 4.53" length, 13/16" thread mount, no anti drain valve internal M1-303.... 3.68 diameter, 5.38" length, 13/16" thread mount, includes anti drain valve internal The tech I spoke with recommended the M1-303 over the M1-302 for a remote mounted oil filter in this application. That's good enough for me. |
The M1-302 and M1-303 both have anti drainback valves.
The 302 does not have an internal bypass relief valve and 303 does. |
never ever ever use anything but OEM oil filters.Especially when you are dealing with a 10 dollar part, have seen the aftermarket fail.

Merc does not make their filters and they are an inferior part compared to many on the list. Merc filters are a $5 part with a $10 label.
Plenty of data has been posted before that shows flow and filtration ratings. |

What OEM filter are you referencing? I've not seen the Mercury filter part # 35-881126K01 for $10. Where have you?

Nothing disappoints me more than seeing a high-dollar boat engine with a FRAM filter on it.
|
^^^^^ And engine builders using them thats even worse.

Any thoughts on the M1-601? It's a crate 502 and I put the Hardin bulkhead on it with the HP6 threads but all of the HP6 filters I've found are 4-5/8" which leaves half the seal unsealed as the bulkhead base is only 4" across. The M1-601 is thinner and should fit nicely.
It does have the internal bypass and I can't figure if that's a good thing or not. The relief valve on the block pad is the heavier mercruiser unit but not blocked off. |
Never mind. The M1 filter has the wrong thread pitch.
|
If you have the room Wix/Napa offer an extra large oil filter for SBC./ BBC engines. It is known as a truck filter, a hair over 8 inches long, more flow and filtering ability. Wix # 51794, Napa Gold 1794, and a racing version is also available from Wix under part # 51794R, but be warned the racing version has a much higher micron rating. While that does allow a slight increase in flow, it also allows slightly larger particles to pass through the filter media. Recommended for racing only with frequent oil and filter changes.

I put System 1 filters on EVERYTHING I build! Last filter you will have to buy!

WIX 51060 or WIX 51060R???? The R filter flows 28 GPM but only filters down to 61 micron whereas the OEM Mercury filter would appear to be 8 GPM flow and 10 micron filtering. Based on this, it seems to me the 28 GPM flow is way overkill and you're trading off tighter filtering for it. The specs of the WIX 51060 are in line with the Mercury filter. Would that be a good choice? Any insights appreciated!
