496 sea water pump question

I'm replacing the impellers on my 04' 496 H.O.s and I need to know if I have an old style housing or a new style housing. When I took it appart the pully came off with 1/2 of the housing along with the impeller inside of it. The back half remained in place connected to the inlet and outlet hoses. The back half that connects to the hoses is slightly grooved. So is the other piece that the impeller sits in. I would rather not replace both housing and cover if I don't have to. What are my options?

Hi i replaced both my impellers a couple months ago and my back plates were grooved you should get them planed flat i did mine by puting the plate in a vice and used a hi speed polisher with hard rubber pad and wet and dry paper 240grit ,make sure you keep the polisher flat when the groovs have gone go over with fine grit paper and you will be good to go ,i was told the back plat is the important one to be flat and you can have a ploblem at idle ,pump may not suck up water at idle with the new impeller and a badley groved backplat hope this helps regards paul

I would get the rebuild kits for the 496 pumps. I ordered mine from JC Marine in Havasu and it comes with everything you need including the impeller. Much cheaper than buying new pumps.

+1

It looks like JC Marine sells the R&R rebuild kit. Definitely the way to go.

I've used this kit many times and it's worked great every time... and a helluva lot cheaper than a pump assy
