How to check fluid levels??

Whats the preffered way to check the various fluid levels in your boat? ie Engine Oil, Trans fluid, power steering, trim tab, etc.

Should the boat be floating in the water? Should it be on the trailer with the engine level?

If anyone knows how boats are set up to have their fluids checked please shed some light.

I think on the trailer would be fine since it is always on a trailer at the shop when it is being worked on. Also I would think you would want to check all the fluids before you put it in the water and start it up. I could be wrong though

Check oil level with the boat in the water. It can vary by a 1/2 quart from the reading on the trailer.
None of the other fluid readings will change much from the trailer to the water.
