Oil cooler repair?
My oil coolers on my 330 hp 454 popped the end off due to a poor winterizing job. They are not damaged other than the end popped off. From what I can see merc just epoxied these ends on. Has anyone re-epoxied these before? If so what did you use?

Its been my experience that these are sodered on and not epoxied. Resoder and pressure check both oil and water passages.

Mike,
I forgot to tell you earlier that if you end up purchasing new be sure and check out MR COOL or what ever the name is. They advertise here on OSO. The price I got for my plate coolers from them were A1 and fast shipping. The only problem with used is that you never really know what has been through them. Like bearing residue, pieces of rods, pistons, etc. I bought some used ones before and cleaned and flushed them numerous times and still got flakes out of them. That was after boiling water, gas and purple power numerous times. Just a FYI. You may also luck out and be fine however if it boils down to a few extra bucks you know the drill. |
Also if you have no luck with repair or other finds I saw some new ones on ebay for like 85.00 ea The one for that price is single pass however you could always run sep for your power steering.

Junk them, they are much cheaper to replace than a motor.

Good call on Mr Cool. I can get two new coolers for only $250.00.

or you could sell me your boat and let me deal with it. BTW for what you paid for it though. I'll even give you an extra "G"

I had exactly the same thing happen to a 330 hp 454 (1987 year) oil cooler. I soldered the end back on with acid core solder and a propane torch. I think that was 15 years ago and its still fine. Many radiator repair shops could do similar work and test it (are there still dedicated radiator repair shops?). Back then a new cooler was quite expensive and I could not locate aftermarket coolers, so I did the repair and washed it out really well.

I just got one from Mr Cool, like 130.00 plus shipping is hard to beat
