Garboard drain repair
 

Hey guys i need to repair the bronze garboard drain in the transom. It's loose and so I was planing to just unscrew it, clean it and then reseal w/5200 and be done w/it.

My questions before I get started are;

1) can/should I reuse the existing screw holes or drill new ones?
2) is it just on the outside of the transom? (1995 Cigarette Top Gun) or is there a backing plate in the bilge? Just trying to be prepared before I head down to the boat...

This is just after pulling the plugs so I need to let it dry out obviously, but I'm wondering what the best approach to fixing this is?

I've heard sand it out, then epoxy and then seal...is that really what I need to do? And I answered question #2 when I went to the boat today :drink: No inner flange, so it's just the outer.

So I'm thinking to dig out all the sealant in the hole, clean it good and then maybe swipe some epoxy all around the inner edge of the hole to seal it and then drill some new holes for the screws and 5200 the chit out of it

as long as the wood isn't soft and the screws bite...that should fix it.

Epoxy isn't going to do much at this point if it wasn't already sealed.

Wouldn't use 5200, if you ever have to remove it again it will be a pain. Any decent sealant will be fine.

If your existing screw holes are stripped out, drill them out and inject a resin/filler mix with a syringe, then re-drill after it cures.

Yeah agreed, it's pretty ugly right now, but most of that is wet and muck because, like I said, I just pulled the plugs.

I think the screw holes are stripped, or at least one is. Why wouldn't I just seal up those holes and drill new ones?

What's recommended for sealant? 4200? 4000? Something else?
