Up to 2009, they had knock sensors, but was turned off in the cal. In 2010 and later models, the sensors were deleted from the engine since they were not being used. The motors been tested with very low octane and still had no issues so its very, very safe.

Can I upgrade the map (send ECU's back to Merc?) and not use the knock sensor? I have a ghost in one motor and the knock sensor is one possible problem. Any other changes that might make the new map worth while?

99% of the time the knock sensor is not bad unless its been in salt water then will need to be replaced thats if its all rusted up.. unscrew it and take a wire wheel to the threads and clean them, try to do the same to the threads in the block..screw the sensor back in, its not grounded properly it will throw the readings off which will either trip a code or throw the timing off in the engine.

I can see the knock sensor but mine has no wire going to it. When I pull up the parts description my 2008 doesn't show to have.

knock sensor is not on, therefore it cannot cause an "issue" in the running of the 525's. In early models, the only code on was the knock sensor hi/low which means it was only checking to see if it was plugged in. It does not pull timing, it does not detect detonation, it does not add fuel for detonation.
