8.1 496HO cam swapping, factory cam gear-1 pink dot, crank gear-pink dot and divit?
Hello. I have everything apart. I did not line up squat before I took the cam, gear, and chain off. I figured there would be two obvious marks, just like every other cam swap I have done. Well, there are two pink/tan dots that look like nail polish. One on the cam gear, and one on the crank gear. The crank gear also has a divit, and what looks to be like some letter "i" or number "1" in a lil box (or something).
Tips? I am putting a Compcams 270 roller in my 2003 2500 Chevy truck. I am kind of scared to take a wild guess. So my job is at a stand still. Help a cracker out w/his four wheeled on-shore-land-lubber vessel? Thanx. |
jm,
My engine builder software shows two marks, just like any other BB Chevy. Take a closer look ? I will look at some other books at the shop in the AM to seee if there is anything different. Bill Koustenis Advanced Automotive Machine Waldorf Md |

Your first picture posted on Diesel Place forum is the correct alignment of the cam gear mark over the crank gear mark. The timing chain is a little loose in the photo, so I would recommend an aftermarket replacement chain as they tend to be tighter than the factory ones that are intentionally made loose so the robot machine can install them with no pressure. Sorry you did not purchase one of our camshafts for the 8.1L, they are much better producers of power and torque than those Comp Cams pieces. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
Thanx for popping in & looking at the photos Ray. It is running. All seems good.
