timing and jetting.... i need small adjustments
so im new as of today but here is my first real post for a real issue... i have a 98 502 roller motor that has a 9022 holley marine 800cfm carb and a dui hei distributor.... where should my timing be set at and do the jets need adjusting?
seems ok now and runs good under 45mph but last night was the first time i walked into it any higher than 3500-4000 and it wouldnt climb over 58 at like 4400?!?!?? im thinking the timing could use some help but im not sure as it would not climb over this rpm even as i played with tabs never moved the trim any this is currently a 217 with a bravo and a mirage plus 25p prop |
how low was it trimmed?
|
Just tabs? Well you need to trim thedrive to neutral at least to see full rpm and speed. Nothing you have stated give any indication you need to change anything. Timing should be around 34 and jets I think were 89 or 88 a little bigger in back.

34 huh?
i got a distributor put together by dui and they told me 24 at 3k.... everyone has been telling me that though! i think i may have found the major issues though... the pcv valve was hooked to the carb not the filter.... GREAT HELPERS i have huh.... probably was just leaned out on the top but as for trim i think i need a new sender because it only goes up with the trailer button not the switch.... i think the wire is broken at the button! I will get on that and answer back later in the week with more info! |
You should set the timing at around 34* when its at full advance/stops advancing any higher. Let base timing fall where ever it may.

It sounds like they are referring to the amount that the distributor will advance... That added to your initial timing equals your total advance. 34 would be your total timing.
this is funny cause i was just sitting thinking about this and it is exactly what came to mind.... motor is 10 + 24 distributor advance =34 total advancement... im retarded sometimes i guess.... its been a long morning!!! |
