Sometimes the rubber hose that connects the drive pickup water flow to the inner transome will get sucked closed as RPM increases due to age. Try changing / checking the hose for softness. I have had this happen on another boat.

The header water inlets can also get clogged with debris. Check them too. Look for the header to discolor in some area's. If it has, its getting hot from little water flow.

I have the drive off right now and have inspected the hose....it looks like new althouh the boat is a 01. I checked the temps with a temp gun and the headers don't get over 90 degrees.

This has me completely stumped!

Could be a torn heat exchanger end cap gasket that folds over and restricts water flow. I had this issue on my 525EFI.

It doesn't have the closed cooling system.

Sand in the block?
...what about a bad gauge? Does the alarm go off? They are separate senders so maybe one is bad???

Did you pull the side plugs on the block (blue plastic winterizing plugs) and get water flow out of them?
I usually have to poke around in there with something before any water comes out.

??

bad gauge.....need to put a infrared gun on the thermostat housing when running to see what it is reading and go from there. cause if your headers all get 90 then its cooling good i would think. bad gauge got me once cost me coulpe 100 bucks before i got it.:angry-smiley-038:

Yes I have checked the gauge and shot the motor with a temp gun all was inline with the gauge.

Also ran the motor with block plugs out to flush them and had flow out of them.

I think i may have found the problem. It only has a side pickup and no nose cone pick up. I am going to swap lowers and see if that changes anything.
