89 454 rebuild

I bought another baja this week and I'm having the 454 rebuilt. While apart is it worth while to change cam and I take or anything like that? The boat is a 89 235 force with a bravo 1.

I asked a similar question about my force 220 but I didn't have to pull the motor on it. This motor I'm pulling because it needs a rebuild and I'm having the shop next to mine (machine shop) rebuild it and while it's apart I figured nows the time if I were ever going to do anything with it.

Thanks

It all depends on what your goals are for the boat, power, speed and so on. How deep your pockets are and what the limitations of your builder are. How do you intend on using the boat? Most importantly, does your builder have marine engine building exp? Marine engiines are completely different animals. The 454 your building, was it a carb motor or EFI? EFI internals are forged where carb motor internals are not. Lots of variables, give us some more info for more direct answers.

If it is a flat tappet cam you want to replace it for sure. Otherwise you may be throwing your money away on the rest of the rebuild, especially if the lifters are not put back on their original lobes. If the rest of the engine needs a rebuild, the cam/lifters are probably toast too.

It's a complete rebuild. It's getting new cam, pistons, etc. I need some suggestions on cams and other things that would help me out with this build.

I put in domes forged pistons, a new cam with .6 lift, and new heads 781's,,, but if i did it again i may jsut put in flat forged pistons and throw a blower on it youll get more hp for prob the same price..

isky 270/280 mega hyd cam is a wikked cam and will wake that motor up! has a nasty idle too..also it worked well with stock volvo center riser manifolds.

3rd cam down..

I was thinking a used blower could be fun. I have quiet a few forced inducted cars and it's easy power for sure. I just don't know how the motors do with boost and steady 3-4000 rpm's for extended time.

Mine is a Gen 4 HO block, with 099 heads, and a Crane #134561 with a grind of H-296-2, port match, and roller rockers. 495 hp.
