Aluminum,S/S,SteelWool & Dillon Brass cleaner
While repairing my seat base for a bolster (older style drop-down with two fat aluminum pieces bolted to s/s hinges), and cleaning the metal I found this combination worked pretty cool.
Just used some x-fine steel wool on the s/s, but more on the aluminum that had the "grunge" from over the years, stained a bit. (kinda like water spots on a car)..etc. THEN............applied some Dillon Brass cleaner I had, and man-oh-man, a mirror finish!:p .........just wanted to pass that on to anyone, as I'm sure there are lots of other methods, this is just one more that really worked great. Don't use steel wool on S/S... it causes the stainless to rust by leaving minute residue behind. Use a "bronze" steel wool (available @West, Boaters world, etc) as it does not rust or the steel wool substitute green, red, brown, etc pads. .
I imagine the same will happen on aluminum as it is softer than the S/S. Actually it is the steel wool that is rusting, not the stainless, but appearances do matter!!:D |
Blownformula....thanks.............What I was using the wool for (and lightly) was to take of the surface crud. The cleaner cut throught the rest, and leaves a slight protective coating.

Fine steel wool and WD-40 works very well for cleaning as well.
