Paging Griff
Griff thanks for all your help on my new motor.
I had a 1988 330 hp ,totally split the block in many many places. Bought 365 hp 1991 with heads and oil pan. I put in the Crane Cam that you had sugested with matching springs, and the Gold Series Roller Rockers. 226/236 .05 112 286/296 . Had the Heads Decked .030. Victor Jr intake and a 750 Deamon. I had the motor totally put together using some of the old parts from the 330 motor and some new parts. This was about 3 weeks ago. When a guy came to buy my old motor, he sugessted I have my new motor Dynoed. For a motor with this low hp I was wondering if it was worth it. Well he said his buddy would not charge me very much and he is really good. So off to the Dyno, this guy was good and very reasonable on his price. We talked about what options we would try and agreed on the price. We made 6 Dyno runs total. This was some serious fun, I could have stayed there all night. Well worth the money. Our first run was with the Victor Jr. and 750 Deamon mech 2nd . Not good Our next run was with the 750 Holley vac 2nd and Victor Jr it this out performed the Deamon. Good but not good enough. Before I get to far with this I need to pull those Dyno sheets. I do not have them with me right know. However to make a long story short. The best set up was an 850 Holley mech 2nds sitting on a RPM Air Gap 470 flbs @ 3500 and 420 hp at 5000. This set up brought on 400 flbs @2500 peaked @470 flbs @ 3500 and ended with 439 flbs @5000 rpm. I know these facts are correct becase I read them many many times . My goals were met and I am very glad I did the Dyno. I found out alot and was suprised when the motor did'nt come apart. This was my first motor ever and I was very worried if I had done things right or not. It is amazing to hear that motor scream at 5000 rpms. Kinda scary even with my lobudget motor. The motor goes in today, first run in boat Saturday. Thanks for all you help. I will post the Dyno numbers soon as well as performance numbers with the new set-up. Thanks Nobudget |
nobudget,
Congrats on the motor coming out so well. I have a similiar setup. I bought a formula that had a 330 in it that had taken water. Ended up getting a 1990 454 Mag shortblock. Had it bored .030 over, ARP rod bolts...etc. Builder got a pair of ported/polished Rectangular heads. According to him I should have around 9:3 - 9:4 to 1 compression (Keith Black Pistons). Went with a similiar cam (comp cams XM270 226 - 236). Also have crane gold roller rockers. Went with a World Products dual plain and an 850 Holley. Topped it off with CMI exhaust. Wish I had it dynoed, but wasn't in the budget. Should be running the motor in a few days. My question is, what jetting/powervalves did you run in the 850? Want to try to get as close as possible on the first try. Thanks, Scott |
Glad to have been of help. I thought my hp guestimates were pretty close. Now I know for sure. About the only difference in your set up is that I'm running a stock magnum intake with a carb spacer and a Holley 800.
Glad everything worked out well for you. You'll probably see about 5-6 mph increase in the boat and a lot better throttle response. |
