cheap prop vs expensive prop

im looking for a prop for mt 22 ft BBC pachanga. is there enough performance difference between a 300 dollar apollo and a 600 dollar fancy prop to make it worth spending the extra coin?

firehawkcat 08-14-2011 08:38 PM

look in the classifieds you can usally find a good bravo 1 prop for around 300-350$

My first P22 stock engine the best prop is a Mirage Plus 23. Yes a labbed prop from BBLADES is the cheapest investment and worth the money. Brett did a great job on mine when I had a 496. I picked up 3 MPH and would do 75 on GPS.

Good Option!!

Many do not know that there are identical versions of Mercury Props at a lower cost. They are sold under the Quicksilver label from Mercury.
They are nearly half the price of the mercury version and are exactly the same prop.

The reason for this is because only Mercury Service Centers are authorized to sell Mercury Props. Quicksilver Props can purchased at marine retail outlets.

Examples:

Mercury Mirage - Quicksilver Thunderbolt
Mercury Laser II - Quicksilver Lightspeed

I was told that the Quicksilver props had much looser tolerances. Meaning some were better than others.

Just buy a used Bravo 1 or Mirage+ and call it done. There's tons of them available.

Do you have a 100% confirmation on this??? Also, the Thunderbolt cost's 457$ and the Mirage+ costs 499$. A Lightspeed is 350$ and the LaserII is 465$. Not alot to save + the Thunderbolt only goes to 23". Is the quality of the steel the same? Is balance and pitch, rake, camber tolerances, fit'n'finish ect. the same?

Brett, any thoughts on this?

I feel the price on the Thunderbolt/Mirage Plus $365 is a great value compared to a new Mercury Mirage Plus which I believe will cost new around $500.

My own opinion is that identical specs on these props will not equate into any great mph performance differences. Remember 21' and 23' pitch props are generally going to run on Alpha One or Bravo One with mild HP ranging from 270hp to 425 on production motors.

Remember some folks are limited on funds and this may help with costs?

Thanks

i posted about this some time back in the props section and this is what i learned. they are the same except for the quality control, pitch sizing, and the quicksilvers dont come with hub kits. depending on your budget and needs it may be a good deal, just depends on the individual situation. id say the quick silvers would be good for the average joe just out for a good time but the speed and performance guy will propbably want to opt for the mercury instead.

When I wanted to change from a 21" Mirage to somethnig with a lower pitch and smaller blades I searched E-Bay and found a brand new, in thel box, 19" Laser II. Paid 200.00 for a 500.00 prop. It took a little time searching but I found what I wanted.

This place has the thunderbolt for $349 brand new. I assume this is the older style mirage and not the "plus". A mirage plus used is about the same price give or take.

Just bought a (1992 Celebrity 2000 bowrider)
4.3LX

Had a factory 19" prop quicksilver. Picked up, handled outstanding. Only problem was I had low rpm vibrations. I went to a prop dealership and showed them my prop. After discussing my different options I decide to go with an apollo 21" stainless st

My factory prop was stainless steel as well but a 19" and a solid hub.
(Output from this prop is 45mph-4800rpm. Steering is solid and very responsive in excel ing.)

This new apollo is stainless steel 21" removable hub
(This prop gave me terrible results.. I was interested in more speed. 4200rpm-40mph. And that was with a full load. So I decide to cut the load in half and see how it handled. Same results.

I am returning the prop tomorrow and possibly going with the Mirage Thunderbolt. Any suggestions?

I want to keep great control, handleing and hole shot. I was only trying to get more speed. But after testing out this apollo prop I am not knowing what to do. I don't want to play this prop game.

I've done some looking on line about the prop I am using now and it seams that this prop is not made anymore. But it was with the Mirage line up. So my thinking is if I get the thunderbolt prop with the same pitch as my current prop will it give me the same results? Is there a difference in prop performance from solid hub or removable hub design.

Brianspot 08-04-2013 10:57 PM

Oh, and the weight of my boat is 2850. So kind of heavy but solid boat.

Brianspot 08-04-2013 11:02 PM

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You might try adding a little cup to the tips of your 19p, sounds like 21p is too much prop. Labbing what you have might give you the results your looking for. With all stock engine & drive your limited in what you can do. Brett & Brad @ BBlades are good people, give them a call. Randy
