alarm help please!
a friend has a 35 fountain ex with twin 496HOs. lately he has been getting an engine alarm on the port engine after acceleration that puts the engine in guardian mode. if he restarts the engine or waits a period of time it will reset and he can run for awhile before it happens again. eventually after a number of restarts it will not alarm until the next time he takes the boat out and then the sequence happens again. does not happen at any specific RPM. he did notice that if he hits the rev limiter both engines go into guardian mode immediately. Any ideas on what's the problem?
all gauges read normal when the alarm goes off. engine and drive oil levels are normal, sensor wires checked for loose leads. approx 250 hrs on factory engines. |

The fact is that the guardian system and the alarms are there to take the guess work out of the equation. If you called any Merc. shop, chances are they will tell you that they have to scan the motor. The cost of a scan tool or diag software is a drop in the bucket compared to what people spend on boats, motors, equipment, gas, etc. |
Don't knock Ray, he is correct. If you have a 496 motor, you need to purchase a scan tool if you are going to do your own work. Otherwise take it to the dealer and pay him to fix.
They are not that expensive and are needed to scan the trouble codes. |
RAY,S RIGHT:drink:IT WILL PAY FOR IT SELF

Sorry If I pushed someones button a little to hard, but I constantly read on OSO on posts where 496 owners are buying and installing all sorts of parts dollars and time doing " I HOPE ITS THIS, OR I GUESS IT MIGHT BE THAT" type of WAGMAR guessing ( WILD ASS GUESS MADE AT RANDOM) on alarms and issues with these new efi engines instead of just buying a $400 TOOL THAT WILL SAVE THEM A LOT OF TIME, MONEY AND FRUSTRATION OVER THE LONG TERM.
Did not mean to offend or anger anyone, just trying to point them in a good direction. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
Go in with a few neighbors/friends and get a Rinda. It's worth it's weight in gold.
