Rev limiter question

Does a rev limiter hurt the engine if you are on it for an extended period? For example, if I'm racing class 6 and don't want to Break-out, is it OK to set the chip, and than run on it for the whole race, 1-hour max.??
Thanks

1hr ? Don't think anyone has really run on a rev limiter more than a few seconds. Longest would see is a drag car waiting for the tree to go down on a transbrake.

I can't see that being good at all for anything. Torsionally, harmonically, etc,etc..........

And I really don't see that making anything more consistent.
Waste of fuel, engine's VE way down, etc, etc. Remember, your dropping spark events to reduce power.

How about a GPS controlled throttle stop ? LOL. :drink:

I know two current class 6 racers who run against the rev limiter to keep from breaking out. I'm not saying that it's good, only that they are doing it. Some rev limiters will retard timing before it goes to skip spark mode. I hit my rev limiter pretty hard (6k) and I don't hear anything different in the motor, it just stops revving. I have the MSD 6M with the separate rev limiter box with the plug in modules it seems to control rpms very accurately and smoothly. I like the GPS device idea though.

The problem with retarding timing while under full load like that is that it sends EGT's through the roof. This is fine for a few minutes but for an hour that will probably result in meltdown.

Thanks for the responses. Phil, I didn't understand what you meant by "sending EGT's thru the roof"?? Could you please help me to understand? Does the MSD box retard the timing?
For what its worth, I also run an MSD-6 with plug in rev modules.
Thanks again.

MSD box does not retard the timing. It makes cylinders miss randomly. Retarding the timing makes the Exhaust Gas Temps go extremely high.

Thanks Pick!
