remote oil filter bottom cover??
I broke the cover on my remote oil filter underneath....the one that winds on last( 1989 mercruiser 5.7) can i just wind another filter over it...and be like i have 2 filters or will it mess something up? boat is a 1989 formula...

anyone? im worried the oil won't flow right because of using the filter instead of the cap...i just cant see spending 75 dollars for a new cap right now

It's a good question, however looking at the diagram I can't tell if replacing that cover with another filter would screw things up or not, so when you are not 100% positive, don't do it.
I would get the cover. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...9+%26+BELOW%29 |
The cover just directs the oil from the outer feed on the filter pad (outlet) back to the center (inlet). The remote fittings are on the housing which is bolted to the block. Thats the same route the oil takes through the filter. That being said, I'd say you're safe to screw a filter on in place of it... although I've never really tried it, I can see no reason why it wouldn't work.
I do have one of the caps you're referring to, if you're interested. Cheap. |
Yes you can put a filter on.

update
it doesn't work...cover is the way to go...idk if it airlocks with the 2 filters idk if the oil can make it through the firlst filter with enough pressure to get into the second one atop the riser...with the cover...perfect...i think the cover routes it differently than the second filter too

the upper filter just would never fill up...if i filled it, it would just empty itself, very strange....but when i took off the bottom one was alwasy under pressure...when i loosened it, it would overflow with oil all over the place...im not sure about the antidrainback disc...dont know what that is...just thought i would post my findings incase anyone else ever comes across this trying to use a second filter as a quick fix in a pinch....
