I have a brand new zero hour stock Merc cam out of a 502 Gen VI . With springs and retainers $75. The springs alone cost over a $100 when you replace a cam.

What "generation" is your OMC 502? Year of boat is 1992? If it's the original motor, it could be a Mk IV or Gen 5. You need to know that. A Gen 6 cam will bolt in either one, as long as you use the Gen 6 timing set and retainer plate, but a Mk IV DOESN'T have provisions for the dogbone roller lifter retainer plate so you'll have to use retrofit roller lifters ($475) and matching pushrods ($150). Ok, so it looks like everyone will be happy and I'm ready to eat crow now, apparently my indecisiveness paid off. I found a great deal on the CP Performance kit (he was asking $500 with 1.72 roller tips and I offered him $400 without them, more on that later) on the internet (brand new in boxes!!!) -- it is this kit, but the guy had already sold the cam, and the kit didn't include a timing chain even though it's in the picture:
http://www.cpperformance.com/p-11620...ifter-kit.aspx These are the parts I got, they are all Comp Cam parts in the kit: 854-16 --Roller Lifters 930-16 --Springs 612-16 --Locks 505-16 --Seals 7815-16 --Push Rods 741-16 --Retainers 205 --Cam Button RMBuilder??? (Bob) is grinding me a custom stick (not sure quite what yet, we'll talk tomorrow) and I'm also buying the timing chain he recommended. He also suggested some roller rockers to go under the stock covers ilo of the 1.72 roller tips the guy had. To top it off I talked to my engine builder and he was willing to not charge me for most of the stuff included in the cost of the re-build, so that price is going down about $300. All in all this could not have worked out better! As noted I always thought this was the better idea, but money was getting in the way, for a net of $700 - $800 I couldn't pass this up. Bob Madera has to be about the most patient man alive to work with me through all of this and my frustration and I can't thank him enough!!! I gotta say, I'm pretty excited :) Hopefully I will get to put some break in time on it at least before I have to put it away...It's going to be a long winter... |
Here is where I ended up:
- Block decked .010 - Heads decked .010 (both of these net 9.2:1 compression up from stock 8.75) - Edelbrock performer RPM intake rectangle port 7163 manifold (compliments of dear old dad, how come dads always have the coolest crap laying around??, to bad I ordered one before he told me he already had one...) - 850 Holley vacuum secondaries - Stock pistons/rods with ARP bolts - Stock Crank, shaved .010 - Gen V block coverted to roller via a smoking deal (parts listed above) - Custom cam by Marine Kinetics, with new timing set and cam retainer plate - No porting on the heads, but did get a valve job - Stainless marine manifolds Cam is on the way and most of the other stuff is assembled. Any power guesses? Bob said he's seen big power (well, big for me) from similar combinations with his cams, the numbers he was throwing out BLEW me away...way more than expected. I am so antsy to get this thing done, I'll dodge ice if I need to to get it broke in, the Dyno will tell the story soon. |
