Shrinking shrink wrap
 

Anyone use a heat gun, such as the paint stripper type, to shrink the wrap for boat winter storage? Trying to avoid the flame types

i did that on my dads deck boat last year...sucks as the heat gun doesnt give out enough heat to go fast enough. You spend too much time waiting for one section to shrink. Maybe if you had a more indiustrial type heat gun it may work better but if i do it again it will be with the flame :)

This is what all the guys use around here. I wrapped mine last year in no time by using this torch. Works perfect. I know you wanted to stay away from the flame, but this is about the only way.

Most auto parts stores. I've used a heat gun and no complants.

I think you're going to find that nothing short of an open flame generates enough heat (in a reasonable amount of time) to get the job done. One can only wonder how many amps a heating element big enough to get the same output as the torches we use to shrink wrap would look like. Then there would be the cable (probably hooked directly to a nuclear power plant) to power it.

If you're worried about the open flame frying things on your boat, they do sell a protetctive film (we use a white one) that comes in rolls and adhere's to the surfaces you want to protect. The stuff actually works pretty well.

I goto the local marina and they sell it to me. Its around 75 bucks for a 30 ft long and how ever else it is wide. Its massive. I always have alot left over.

Was thinking the heat gun would just be easier for a newbie. See no since in burning down the marina. ;)
Going to do this with the boat on the lift. Marine told me they charge double for that, understandably do to the hassle.
Watch you tube videos, seems pretty straight forward and somewhat easy.
