Mechanical indicator cable bellow?

Seems like 9 out of 10 boats I see don't use bellows for the indicator cable on tabs/drive.. wondering if the bellow is actually required for the end of the cable or what?

I just went with some indicators on the 24 and they have new bellows of course, just got curious about em.

The K-plane fitting is supposed to be water-tight. Fountain uses shrink tube around the cable between the end and that fitting. I had to have the cable replaced on one of my K-planes and the shrink tube was not replaced and I had no leaks. Just to make it look like "factory install", I bought some shrink tube (either 3/8 or 1/2" - dont remember anymore) and made it look the same as it did from the (Fountain) factory. There was no "bellows".

Thats what I was figuring, the bellow is mostly cosmetic.
