Sonny's Big blocks
 

Hey guys, question, why don't people put in Sonny Leonards big blocks with options of over 1000 Cu. In. with over 2100 HP, naturally asperated, in their big boats instead of multiple engines? It would be easier to get the single engine lower in the hull, less weight, less space required, etc. I have only seen these engines in drag racing so far but it seems to me if someone made a drive for them it would be a great alternative, just sayin...

I always wondered that too.

My guess is that the WFO longevity isn't there...kinda like the pro-stock engines that get gone thru between rounds.

The price of a 1005 cid. sonny motor is extremely high. Yes you could build it as a marine engine, but the price for something like that, would be thru the roof. Also, if running it as a single 2500+ hp motor, reliabillity would be a huge issue. A pair of custom 1200+ all alu motors with closed cooling could probably be bought for less.

It would be cool to have a pair of all alu n/a motors pushing 1300-1350 hp or 1800-2000 hp blown on 91 in a 1005 cid size. But with a price tag of quite more than 100.000$ pr. motor, it's not really the cheapest way.

An 811 cid n/a motor putting out 1300+ hp won't live in a plasure boat.

Go to a NHRA drag race, take note of the maintenance between rounds in Pro Stock. Same basic engine set up. (6plus seconds) Check the octane it takes to keep one of those monster from beating it's self apart.

Pro stock is not a fair comparison. 500cid at 10,500 rpm... of coarse its high maintainance. That engine at 7,500rpm would last a long time if you took the 1.00" of lift out of it :). There is NOTHING special about a marine engine. I'm not sure why people think marine engines are black art:party-smiley-004:

Good point, I wonder how much the new Merc costs, it also produces 1350 HP but need blowers and 4 cams etc. to get there. I just think the simplicity factor would be in favor of the Sonnys.

Merc probably wants double, Sonny's been around a long time, this is a street motor running 91 octane, why wouldn't it last.
I'm sure he could build one for Marine use, he even offers EFI.

Sonny's a custom builder, he would probably build any size to run any octane, EFI or carb. 1005 cid on 87 pump, can only imagine how that would run.
