tyler crockett engine upgrades?

thinking of upgradeing my 496 ho's to the 500-550 hp range got quote for parts from raylar $7k range and tyler crockett $4k range anyone familiar with his engine kits ?

triple 300s 11-11-2011 02:34 PM

and was the raylar price with labor included?

I have receipts of the work that was done on the boat I am speaking of in the above post.

Parts - 3330.00
Labor - 4300.00

Keep in mind, this is without intake and CMI headers. Intakes are a horrible design on the 496s...

26sonic 11-11-2011 04:01 PM

no raylar price was parts only $7k!! i have someone already to do labor work. so do u think with the parts from him the engine will be reliable??

Just do the Raylar 600 kits and be done with it. Building on the stock bottom end might work for a little while but will eventually fail.

I dont know how anyone can get (or claim on getting) over 500-530 horsepower with the stock intake. I ported mine and fooled with it and spent nearly $750 on each and it was still like putting lipstick on a pig. Plus, they look like dog$hit.

Tyler builds some amazing motors and does it for many of the race teams. I can personally vouch for his build quality.

All I know is a good a buddy of mine is still waiting for his motors back from Crockett. 8 months, I believe. Missed the entire season up here!!!

I don't know who you are but when I wrote the estamate for your freid here we were going to find some take off parts because he had a complete #@%^$ basket case of parts and his motors came to me in pieces from the last guy that worked on his boat that the one motor blew up on. I gave him a quote to rebuild both motors and make 400 to 420 HP and when I was done the motors made 512 HP. He told me he was going to have Sunsation put the motors back in the boat and I know Wayne and Joe and they don't work with this kind of project all in pieces so I said I would put it all together for him. After spending the last week digging thru my parts room and shed and everyware else finding all the little parts missing I have the boat all done just finishing the ex we will have it ready to test next week and I am inviting you to come up for the test ride because I like to meet people that talk **** about me that don't even know me or know the whole situation that when on with this project !!!!!!!!!!! :D

Tyler builds an awsome motor. We will run 60 miles WOT airin it out and never have a problem. We have done this racing another boat he is on thinking if something happens we will not have a problem because he is right next to us. What we realize is we don't need him next to us because that motor is bullet proof. If he doesn't get back to you in a timely manor it is because there are a lot of people that like his work. Be patient!!! Revd Up Velocity copilot.

No return calls, promise dates that you miss, and every other excuse in the book. I'm not saying you can't build something, just can't do it in timely matter. Don't make it sound like you did some miraculous thing and make 512hp. 454's to 512 is, as far as I'm concerned, not brain surgery. Just do a better job of communicating and getting your shi* done. If you did, you wouldn't have to be on here trying to defend yourself.

Ok tuff guy I will try harder to please your freinds if I sat on the phone and talked to everyone I would not get anything done. Don't judge a business you know nothing about and for the record these were 310 HP 454's with stock iron heads and yes it took a little brain surgery Dr. Douche !!! :D

Ok, not to continue this pissing contest, but I have always heard GREAT things about Tyler's motors. I have personally never had him do any work for me, but a couple guys I boat with have in the past and were/still are extremely happy.

I did send him e-mails and was potentially have some work done by him (not even sure if he was in my price range) but I didn't get a timely response via his website so I began my work elsewhere. I admit I was quite pissed at the time. PAUSE -- however I contacted him in July and you can't reasonably expect a business with his reputation in our area to drop everything in prime season to hold your hand. After attempting to contact him it took a while to find anyone who was qualified to do a marine engine -- thankfully, with the help of RMbuilder (bob) and my engine guy, I was able to get things done, JUST in time to put it away :)

I can't speak to any of the other issues.

1BIGJIM 11-12-2011 09:24 PM

I do not want to get into this debte and I am dispointed Tyler would even post! The man has helped a little guy like myself out for FREE. Just like Bob RMBILDER they are great guys and PRICLESS:drink:
Thank you TYLER, and please do not repsond, there is a reason you are still in business. Rock On:evilb:

ICDEDPPL 11-12-2011 09:36 PM

I dont know any of the parites involved......

but i do know that $7630 for two 500+ hp engines, dynoed, and tuned is a very competitive price.

being in business for my self i can relate to the whole stituation. once in a while I encounter people that cannot be pleased no matter what you do simply because they are unreasonable.

and sometimes my schedule gets so crazy that i cant possibly be everywhere and talk to everyone ....ther simply arent enough hours in a day.

i do know this....anyone that is doing qualtiy work, especially in the boating industry, will stay busy......almost regardless of price. unfortunatley there are no such people around here....i have yet to find a single shop that i would let work on ANY of my boats. after a single discusion with them it becomes apparent that they are full of SH!T and/or lazy as hell. this isght has more info than the self proclaimed "experts" in my area.

I started to quote some of the previous replies but there were too many with my same sentiment. You see comments all the time that start with "I heard" or "a friend of mine said" and more often then not the WHOLE truth is not told.

Last year I was rebuilding one of my 525's and was given Tyler's number by someone involved with racing that had dealt with him several times. Tyler took the time to speak with me about some of my issues and offered to do what he could to help. For him to even take the time out of his obviously busy schedule was awesome and backed up what I have heard from several people about him. Thanks again Tyler!!

The only advise I can give is to first figure out what your budget is and then shop around from there. If you try and skimp on things here and there to try and save a couple bucks you will end up having more problems down the road.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

PS Tyler-I agree with several of the other posters as well...your reputation speaks for itself so don't feel like you have to answer to any of this.

I'll tell you what I "heard" I "heard" a 27' Fountain Fever blow past me like I was standing still about 100 times over the past few years (one of Tyler's Motors form years back). Said boat ties up with me (on my previous boat) on a regular basis and was located two spots over from me at my marina....he now keeps the boat elsewhere.

So there is something to the whole "heard" thing ;)

PROWRENCH 11-13-2011 12:00 PM

No matter what business you're in, somebody is gonna talk trash about you. People are like that. I don't know Tyler, don't even know anyone who does. I've only heard good things until this thread. Always take "horror stories" with a grain of salt.
Especially from sunny guys.
Haha just for 288kid's benefit!

That means when someone says 496's and uses an apostrophe "S" that means there are more than one...The price I told him was for twin motors since thats what he was inquiring about. I see that you offensively "agreed" with the pricing...maybe you should stop having drinks in your tiki bar and get with the program...

I am done talking in this post I let all my happy customers and all my wins in offshore racing back me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since he is having someone else do the labor isn't all this drama a moot point?

Sounds like a couple people had friends that didn't get what they ask for. What I have found withe these type of posts is that 99.9% of the time there are three sides to every story. Not sure if Tyler is telling the whole story but obviously 07DominatorSS didn't.

I have no beef in this thread but I have talked with Tyler a few times and he was always helpful. He rebuilt my friend's 502 and aside from a couple minor things I thought he did a great job.

2tonchevy hit the nail on the head, you can't please everyone. For the most part Tyler has a great reputation and is one of the best in the country.

tylogan11 11-14-2011 01:46 PM

If you want to get a hold of Tyler call him, he will take the time to answer your questions, he built my 502/procharged did an awesome job I would use him again. My dyno numbers: @5,200rpm= 716/lbft--709Hp. When came time for the water test and final tune he drove 3 hours to my lake. Tyler is a stand up guy, I'm lucky I live in Michigan.
