Do these filters match the requirements for the Merc remote mount oil filter. Specifically the AC Delco part. I was wondering if there is any difference with the bypass valve in the filter. Does the Merc filter have a different valve pressure than those listed? I would hate to have the bypass kick off and not filter the oil.

I use a Fram HP4. Costs about $12.00 but supposed to be good - who knows.

Just like the oil, the most important thing is to keep 'em fresh......

Like 29Outlaw I use the HP4. I could only find HP4 and HP6 in Eddie, Teague and Rex catalogs, and frams site didnt give any info. Do you know if the HP5 is better or do you have any info on it. Thanks Mark

Mark,

Last oil change I went into the store intending to buy 2 HP4 racing filters. I grabbed what I though were 2 HP4’s but when I got home, I discovered that one of them was an HP5. The HP5 would not fit. They are totally different. As far as buying them from a catalog – no need to. I get them from Trak Auto in Prince Fredrick.

Mark,

What boat are you in this year? We may be sucking Bobby's wake if he buys the 550hp Rieter-Baja. Do you know the guy in the wicked, red Hydrostream that runs 100+

Mark in So. MD 06-14-2002 07:46 PM

Hey thanks John. I looked in the catalogs bc i figued they would have some decription but they didnt, and with Teague not listing them i kinda wondered.

I too bought them at Trak, but i only had to spend half the amount of you. Mr. double trouble:p but right now i am not spending anything so maybe i should be quiet.

Also Pat uses HP4 in everything he owns and works on so i think we are safe. Oh he pulled the motor and trucked it up to, hummmmm Landover i believe to get a dyno pull. It pulled just over 550, not bad.

Hey Mark,

Answer up about the guy in the Hydrostream. You are a Hydrostream Guru. For sure you know this guy.

Mark in So. MD 06-14-2002 07:57 PM

Ha, we were posting at the same time.

For me, boatless for a while, saving my pennies. Cat coming soon.

Red HydroSteam, Mike Cohen. Lived right next door to me for my entire life. He lives in Rockville now but normally keeps the boat at his parents still next to me. He doesnt have it set up right. That is easy a 100+mph boat. I have seen that motor and model HydroStream do it penty times when i used to own mine a few years back. I had it up to 96 but naturally those take some skill to drive and he just bought it not too too long ago so he still needs some seat time, but he will get it soon enough. Those boats are really tricky to set up, with first the motor and then the jackplate and number of set back inches also where the prop shaft should be in revelance with the pad, gear ratio, and then prop, oh brother the prop selection. Believe it or not I tried 14 props on mine and finally got it dialed in perfect after 1 1/2 seasons.

Here's a good study done on the major brands of oil filters. It has been posted here several times, but it is definitely worth the reading. You may never want to buy a Fram filter again after reading this study. Hope it helps out.

Oil Filter Study

Laveyman, I too read that and it is very informative. Every article that i have read though do not have Frams Racing line of filters.

I was in the parts store today and a Fram HP8 should also work. It seems to be just a short version of the HP4 for people that don't have the room to run the larger filter. Has anyone used an HP8 on a big block?

I've seen this too. I'd never use a Fram either. When I was younger  I worked for a Saab dealer. They had a bulletin that stated something like: Fram filters suck. If you use one on your Saab, forget the engine warranty. Something like that?!

I just put a set of Pure One filters on the boat yesterday. Taller filter than stock Merc, so it must have more filter area.

HP-4 added to the list. Will repost after a few weeks, so everyone can see it again.

Have always used ( based upon engine builders reccomendation ) Fram HP-4 @ $9.00 ea and AC Delco PF35 @ $3.00 ea. I have no clue which is better, however I certainly know which is cheaper.

I currently use Mercury racing filters. They are gloss black and cost me $9.00 ea when purchased from local dealer by the case.
