removing tabulators 496Ho

Hi all i know this has be brought up befor ,but i just removed my risers for the first time ,and was suprised how restricktive the tabulators were, i would like to leave them out and remove my internal flappers, as i all so have the external rubber ones on the tips . any idea how much free HP would be gained from this and how many of you 496ho owners have done this without trouble later on . my boat is allways put back on trailer and motors washed out on the boat ramp after every use, thru transom exhaust thanks for any help .

Happy new year to you all . regards paul

bob at full throttle marine has dyno results posted on this and proves it may gain you 10hp, excellent article on this and testing on diff exhaust systems as well

i'm going to remove mine this winter as well, but my boat is always kept in climate control year round, the turbulators are there for condensation in the risers from temp changes

I pulled mine out a few years ago. No issues. Deeper rumble. No noticeable power change.

8 hp on the dyno removing the turbulators.

Anybody removed the turbulators on a procharged engine? Any water issues after removing?

Any noticable power increase?

I've removed them on a couple of my customers boats, and haven't noticed any difference in performance. I'm told it makes more power, but would probably only show up on a dyno. Merc must have thought there was a need for them, so i've always put them back!

can't tell....it was done same time as the whipple...power increase is.....:evilb::evilb:

The guy i got the Procharger from said that he never saw any gains from removing them. The pc increase is great as well!

my reasoning is...if you push more air in,try your best to get more air out, specially a 496 with its poor-flowing exhaust port...remove all the restriction you can...they do make more power without it....jmo

I removed mine on my old boat, and while it will theoretically make more horsepower, I didnt notice any "seat of the pants" or actual speed increase at all. If u enjoy working on ur boat and just feel like doing an improvement, then have at it! I used to do that when I was younger to my cars ie: taking the slack out of the throttle cable, making cold air intakes, etc :). It was alot of fun then!

Thanks for all the replys .a mixed bag but the more i look at that small hole ,there comeing off and the internal flappers , as for working on cars and boats i allso did when i was younger , trouble is i still cant leave things alone . Can anyone tell me if all mec motors are fitted with tabulators if no, why the 496 ?? THANKS AGAIN regards paul

The turbulators are there to collect moisture than condenses in the riser after the engine is shut down and sits in the water for longer periods of time. The turbulators catch the dripping moisture and boil it off on startup. If you boat in salt water leave the turbulators in for sure. As for power gains Bob's numbers are good 8-10HP and as many have said here that does not translate to much in most boats. In a supercharged application the power gain would be larger at high rpms probably 20HP+ depending on the boost and build.

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

They used to be std fit on motors like the Bulldog with Gil manifolds and s/s risers.

Removed them from my set up and have had no issue's after 2 years .

Are these located where the riser bolts up to the manifold? how are they removed? Do they just pop out or do they have to be cut? I assume my 03 model 496 Mag has them as well.

Part #16. You only need to replace one of the gaskets upon removal. You may want to have a new set on hand in case the old ones get dorked up when you remove the turbulators.
