468 Cam Selection
Both engines are out of the Cig and going to the machine shop. Looking for cam selections feedback. Any/all is appreciated!
'85 Mistress with what were 330's 468's, 2blt mains Steel GM cranks Eagle rods TRW Forged (9.1:1) Pistons Merlin Oval Port Heads DP Performer Intakes Stainless Marine Exhausts Holley 750's The goal is very usable power and longevity. Looking at Comp Cams sticks. Option 1: Lift = .547/.547 Dur @ .050 = 232/237 Lobe Seb = 112 Option 2: Lift = .537/.537 Dur @ .050 = 228/236 Lobe Sep = 112 Option 3: Lift = .544/.547 Dur @ .050 = 226/236 Lobe Sep = 112 (Edited to correct durations as thanksfully pointed out by Jim) I know these are all pretty similar. Am I way off base? Want to stay with hydraulic flat tappet. Thanks! |
I would say option 3 out of your choices. It has the best operating range at 1600-5800rpm.By the way those duration numbers are advertised and not at .050".

I did a cam swap last winter and used a crane Hyd. Flat tappet. I cant remember the grind off the top of my head but you could find it using my User name if you wanted to take a look. I thought it was a bit pricey but was real impressed with it. Good luck! My build was similar to yours. |

Hope the info might help you out. Like I said, I was real impressed with it! The main reason I decided on the crane cam was because of the 114 lobe seperation and the splite lifts. I have a video of it posted in one of the topics and never incounterd any reversion with it. It also sounds pretty healthy. With my Combo, it pulled up to 6,000 with a 21p (3 blade) and 5,450rpm with a bravo1 24 labbed by bblades. It felt strong up to around 5,800. I did a lot of upgrades last winter that I posted quite a bit of info on and was fortunate enough to receive a lot of info from other members on. From cam selection, to timming and prop testing. If you dig around through the post I'm confident you'll find some good info.
I'm currently building a 516 with merlin grumpy Jenkins heads, hyd roller cam and a b&m 250 blower. Hope to be done with it by spring. I've still got a little ways to go though. Keep us updated and good luck! |
The crane 132561 is the stock cam in the Merc 420 and 525SC. It is .530/.551, 228/236, 114 lob sep
The Crane 134241 (cam kit #134242) is nearly identical in specs. It is .534/.553, 226/236, 112 lob sep. I used this cam in a hopped up 454mag with good results. It is not nearly as expensive as the 132561. I highly doubt you will see any hardly any difference in performance between them or any of the others you listed. There probably wouldn't be a 10-15hp difference between them on a dyno. |
