You need to get a thermostat in it. Contrary to intuition, it will cool better with a thermostat than without.
The reason a car can sometimes run hotter without a thermostat is the coolant doesnt have enough time to sit in the radiator and cool down, before re-entering the block. In a boat, cooling water doesnt get re-circulated, unless you have a closed cooling system, which the original poster does not have. |

In a car, yes. Boat, no. No thermostats=cold water temps in a boat cooled with sea water.

My two 502mpi`s also run cold oil temps which I do not like.
Gauge hardly ever moves off 140* oil temp, after adding a 160* stat it has improved a whole 20 degrees... sometimes it will get up to 190* after a long wot run. water temps stays around 160* How can I raise the oil temps? Can I add a oil stat? No condensation in oil but it does get dirty fast |

No condensation in oil but it does get dirty fast If the oil gets dirty fast, it can be a sign of worn rings, or I think excessively rich condition can do that to (which will lead to accelerated ring wear). I dont think adding oil stats to get oil temps up will keep oil from turning dark so soon. Are you consuming a lot of oil? |
My primary concern is really to get those oil temps up, the dirty oil is just something thats been buggin me. In the 600SC the oil would stay clean what seemed forever.
100hr. on Tyler rebuilds I`m hoping the rings aren`t worn. Anyway Joe stop making me do all the work send me a link to those oil stats.:evilb: btw, due to the headers the oil filters are remote mount now, make a difference? EDIT: This? http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...28-0F877642%29 this could work too http://www.amstreetrod.com/501ASR.php4 |
if you are getting water flowing thru block, but no holdback from restrictor or thermostat. the engine block will not be able to transfer heat to water, instead it transfers to oil(hot oil temps). you should have some reading of temp in water, and any MEFI uses water temp for choke sequence. black transom good indication of rich, it will kill engine. find out how your engine is setup, i would go with the mercruiser filter t-stat(less oil line fittings)

I still have not heard from CK Motorsports, but is it possible they could have the fuel curve not tied to the water temp and the motors are running correctly? I mentioned the black on the back of the boat in the beginning and he said it may be the higher octane I put in the boat.

I would bet my a$$ that if you take two identical engines, and run the first one without a water thermostat, and run 5000RPM for say 5 minutes straight. Then run the one with a 140* water thermostat, for 5 minutes straight at 5000RPM. The one with the water thermostat will have higher oil temps than the one running without the water thermostat. |

Mr. ICDEDPPL, here is how the merc thermostatic oil filter mount is setup.
Sometimes you can find these on here in the swap shop. That sandwich adapter deal you posted I believe requires you to mount the filter on the block, underneath, and thats no fun. |
