502 Engine help
 

hey guys,

New on the forum and would like some help.

My boat was brought over from the states and winterization was done on it before it left. The guy who did the winterizing for me mentioned that he was unable to connect a small hose to the block drain which he claimed was just a pick up point for the pressure guage. Ive searched the enigne but cant find the block drain plug anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? were talking about the port engine that is and its a 502 from the years of 1994-1995

The block drains are on the sides of the block right above the oil pan gasket, there is one on each side, on the starbord side its right were the dip stick goes into pan, right above that, very close to where the motor mounts bolt to block, they are hard to see unless you can get a clear view under the exhaust. its a 1/4 NPT hole that has a brass plug in it or in your case a brass hose barb fitting, i have these on mine for presure gauges. hope that helps

I looked everywhere on the port engine and couldn't find it. Can i still run the engines with this unplugged? The problem is i don't have any competant mechanics in my area..

That drain is right where it's been described. If you fire off the motor and the petcock is open, it's just going to "pee" water into the bilge of your boat. I suppose that would be one way to see if it's closed or open but if you choose to run the motor...I suggest that you do not run it for to long before checking the bilge for standing water.

Alright, I went down real deep and almost got stuck in that compartment (Fountain 32 has one of the tightest engine compartments i ever saw!) I found a small hose hanging in the bilge. I manage to locate what looked like a sort of fitting that was leaking a little bit of water ( Ihad previously started the engines for a couple minutes) I figured that was the block drain plug that the hose needed to go over. Does that sound correct? it looked like it was the only empty fitting down there so i pretty much figured that was the one.

Also, im talking about the port engine. It was located on the right side of the port engine that is if im looking at it facing the back of the boat.

That should be the petcock. More than likely (depending on what type of petcock it is, on the end it will have what feels like "two tangs" (that's the best I can describe it). One that stick off of either side. make sure that it is tight...turning it one direction will open the petcock and let water out. The other will close the petcock. Hope this helps ya out. Mark

Is that where the pressure guage line is supposed to go? or have i got it all wrong.. because i really cant find the block drain plug

time to post up some pics. your dealing with something that doesn't sound right. Need to see what's going on there.

That is the connection you are looking for. I also have a 92 502 in my Fountain and that where my water pressure gauge was connected. Its a brass nipple that the hose will push onto. You should remove the plug from the block and stick a small wire into the hole while the garden hose it hooked to the engine. While the engine is being used it sucks up small pieces of dirt etc. from the bottom of the lake and this sediment settles in the engine right at that point. So every year I pull the hose off the nipple. Then I remove the nipple/plug from the engine block and turn the hose on. Once you stick a small piece of wire in youll see all kinds of stuff come out. Run water till its clean then reinstall nipple/plug and reinstall hose on nipple. You should do this procedure to both drain plugs on each motor once a year unless you are in muddy conditions then a little more often.
