I don't think it was corrosion that "attacked the manifold" but rather a poor casting right from the factory. As mentioned, it's pretty common. They cast around the brass insert, and as long as the brass insert was molded in well enough, they didn't really care if it was covered perfectly.

Yep, poor casting from the factory. The manifold functions just fine and all the imperfections are hidden by the factory paint and thermostat housing. No corrosion at all.
