bbc magnum intake manifold question

1 Attachment(s)
Hey folks,

I have an aluminum magnum manifold with the inserts in the cooling passages. The aluminum has corroded a bit but the bronze still looks sound. This is what it looked like when it came out of the parts washer and media blast. Take a look at the pic.

The sealing surface looks good too.

Would you use this or trash it?

That's the way most of them looked brand new, poor casting but fully functional.

I thought it looked sound. What would be a good product to fill the gaps in the aluminum prior to paint?

I am going with closed cooling so in reality I don't need an intake with the bronze inserts. ...I own it so I guess I'll use it though.

I had one of the 2 on my boat looked like that. I just used some JB Weld to build it up and make it smooth.

Poor quality control in the casting department as many look like that- should be no problem.

i understand all thats been said here but for the couple hundred bucks a new and much better manifold would cost i can't imagine its worth the time and effort to fix it.

I hear you but what time and what effort? They all need painting so no extra time or effort there and smearing some epoxy of some sort to fill the voids is about 15 minutes of work the way I see it.

thats a fair enough assessment... but... what if youre wrong ? what if the corrosion that attacked the exterior also caused porosity elsewhere . my point simply is that you have a lot of money in this motor in all respects. for the last 200 bucks you can buy a new airgap or something and eliminate all the risk and have a better manifold probably.. i'm not trying to sell you on anything... just saying that if i'm standing there looking at an intake that i have to bondo up, then i have to say to myself " gee... what's the smart and conservative play here ?" for me its a new manifold. its a cost/ risk/ benefit deal...
