454 to 496 upgrades
Hey all, in the process of stroking my 454 I'm going to paste my engine builders quote below....& my question is (iwaiting to hear back from him as well) if its not a marine block, is it a simple change over to suit?
"FYI i may very well end up aquiring a factory roller 4 blt. 454 block. we could upgrade from your block to the newer style block taking advantage of roller cam, better oiling system, one piece rear main seal. i'm to find out today. i'll get the cost of iron oval port heads too. we need to make our decision which route were going to take. i'm hope we can do the 496 roller block and dart oval port heads." Thanks guys Pat |
I have built several and they perform great with the correct parts. There is no such thing as a marine block. You can use retro link lifters with a roller cam and they work as well as a GEN 6 block.
Don't buy any junk cheap parts and you will be fine. Contact RMBUILDER Bob Mandra to custom grind a cam. Its worth ever penny, and not much more than a off the shelf cam. He can also set you up with a good set of heads. Do not forget exhaust, all performance builds start there. |
Where is what I did to a Mark IV this past spring.

do you have to change balancer and flywheel to balance the added displacement?

Thanks guys Pat I can understand if you were just gonna upgrade the current rotating assembly, but at this point your pretty much going all new parts. |
