Hawkeye in hull Depth transducer advice
 

I am mounting my Hawkeye transducer in hull as they recommend but have a few questions. I have made two runs with it loosely mounted in vaseline and taped down as they suggest in the directions. First trip I noticed it was slower to read the depth then when I held it over the side to check measurements and it does not read in water less then 7 feet. The second time I took it out I put more vaseline and it worked a little better. Once I permanently apoxy it down will it give me better readings? Anyone else have this issue?

put the transducer in a bag of water and seal it up, any air bubbles can cause inaccurate readings, then you can move it around to find the best location

i bought on about 6yrs ago for my wave runner.i tried diffrent locations and could never get the dam thing to work.i could never get it to read in shallow water,and half/azz in deep.i do not even use it now.matbe because of what the hull is made of or location.

I will try it with the bag idea this will be my third test, only concern is how to get it to stay flat on the bottom where it needs to be and not swishing back and forth with the water in the bag. When I hold the transducer over the side of the boat it works instantly with very accurate readings since a buddy had his boat next to mine with his transom mounted and it had the same reading. I just want to be sure that when I apoxy it down it gives good readings.

If you have a cored construction it is very difficult. I have set one in oil using a cap and about 4 inches of PVC with success. Or, I've heard you can cut into the inner layer of fiberglass and epoxy it in. Make sure it's behind the step on a step haul boat.

Is your hull solid glass or cored with balsa/other coring?

If balsa and you want accurate readings you'll need to be prepared to get out your drill and mix up some resin...

It is a solid hull.

I spent hours trying to get thru the hull to read, it was always problematic. Transom mount works 100% better. I mounted mine higher so it doesn`t get ripped off... its out of the water when underway so no reading but I only need to know depth when off plane trying to anchor
