Getting ready to do spark plug readings, have a few questions
 
Getting ready to do some plug readings and I have a couple questions. I am more concerned about the procedures leading up to pulling the plug than actually reading the plug itself.

1. How long do I have to run it wide open before I shut it off?

2. Can I bring it off plane quickly and then kill it before the idle circuit takes over or do I keep it hammered and shut it off?

3. If I have to leave it hammered then shut it off, do I bring it back to neutral after its off to prevent the prop from turning the motor over as I'm slowing down?

4. How much water is going to rush over the back of the boat? :lolhit:

Run it up to wide open throttle. Once there either quickly pull back on throttle and turn off or if safe just cut power. Wait til at rest before putting in neutral. Than check plug repeat. It will take a few runs to see plugs make color unless it's extreme.
And remember porcelain does not tell you jetting. It shows the effect. Pay attention to the base ring.

Just outside of Johnstown during winter and at Lake Raystown during summer ....:ernaehrung004:....most coalminers do , it washes the dust down :lolhit:

if you have a 4v carb do the primary first,take off the flame arrestor and open throttle just until the secondarys start to open, mark the throttle position..run the boat like mentioned and use your mark on the throttle and adjust accordingly,then do the wot..this way you wont run lein on the primary circuit..

If i made coal miner money I would have a 502 mag efi and wouldn't be messing around with this carb :drink::lolhit:

To keep water from coming over the back of the boat, when you slow down cut a turn to either side. It might rock you a bit but will keep water from coming over the transom.

very true,plus not to get a back wash through the exhaust.that would really pluck yer day of boating,and ,,,,,,,,spill you beer.

worth mentionning...do not use the plugs that have been on the engine for 5 years....just sayin...
