Boat is stock There is a pipe thread port that also provides a feed for the 3 wire digital oil pressure sender. they usually do a double feed off of a small brass manifold. one side is pressure. the singe wire feed is temp. It's just aft of the oil cooler and right behind the raw water hose |
Stock Merc 496's do not come with oil temperature gauge sensors. You may have gauges, but if no sensors have been installed in the engines and connected via wire to the helm then you will have no oil temp guage readouts until sensors are connected to your guages. These would not be Mercury sensors but aftermarket provied by the gauge manufacturer, possibly, Livorsi, Gaffrig, Faria, Stewart Warner, etc. Its pretty coomon for boat builders to install extra gauges and not install the sensors or wiring or connect them.

Seams like a waste of money. Any one want to buy a set of yellow oil temps? Haha redoing my dash anyway for gps not going to put back in gauges that don't work!

I use a cheap infrared heat gun to periodically check oil temp. Just aim it at the oil pan. I also make sure the oil filter isn't sizzling whenever I'm looking things over.

A sizzling oil filter is bad..... That's all I am gonna say.......

Sometimes boat manufacturers put oil temperature guages in dash from order or frill space reasons. If they are not hooked to properly located oil temperature sending units on the engines they will not read at all or properly. Mercruiser 496 engines do not come strock with any oil temperature provisions so if the rigger for the boat wants to use those guages they must be hooked up to aftermarket oil temperature sending units on the engine.
