hp500 spring info
I found some old threads but not sure if anything has changed since..
what brand valve springs ,seals and keepers should I use??or should I stick with stock Merc springs?? are the rockers adjustable or torqued to specs?? its a year 2000.. Thanks |
Rockers are adjustable. Use the Isky or Comp springs.

I contacted Eddie Young and he set me up with everything you need, Isky springs, retainers, shims, seals etc. Great guy to deal with and has all the information concerning installation you will need.

Does this mean you're getting that repowered bayliner you were talking about?

Teaque has a pacc spring that works with the stock valve also.

Changed the springs on a buddy's 2001 500efi and got everything thru Teaque. Took about 6 hours.
Hydraulic lifters so you have to really be on your toes to adjust them. If they are not pumped up all the way it is real tuff to get the feel of where the top of the lifer is so you can go another 3/4 turn or so. Someone had been in that motor before and almost had the lifters bottomed out. Lifters clattered for about 3 minutes before they pumped back up and and then everything was nice and smooth. |
I agree with HavinATantrum. Give Eddie Young a call. I just did the springs in my 500. He is supper nice to work with. He will point you in the right direction. I think he recommended Isky springs but I would have to go back and find the part number. Young Performance is 615-216-7449

the 500 efi, 525 efi, 600sci and 700 sci have the same valves, I think they are a shorter valve and spring install heigth is 1.8.I doen't know about the early 500 hp's.
I doen't know if every manufacture make a spring for the shorter valve ,if in fact it is acually shorter. |
Are you guys not doing the valves and only the valve springs? also are you doing this in the boat and not pulling the heads off?
|
Most are doing them in the boat. They are changing springs, retainers, locks and seals. They aren't removing the heads. Some boats will require the engines to be removed to do the work. There just isn't enough room.
In most cases, it is easier to pull the engines if the heads need to be removed. Eddie |
