Alternator

I'm looking at upgrading my stereo system by adding a 5 channel amp. I have an '01 Baja Hammer with a 454 MPI completely stock. Currently running 2 batteries would like to add another battery and was wondering if i need to get a new alternator? I'm trying to find a decent alternator w/o spending a bunch of money. Any ideas? I checked KE performance but didn't know if anyone else has done this and what would work the best.

I've been running the 105amp 1 wire for a few years with no issues.

Not sure if 105 amps is enough for what you're doing but they have great customer service and their product has held up well for me.

considering that you can run a whole house on 105 amps, if 105 amps isn't enough he needs to just get a small nuke from a sub i guess...

105 amps at 110 volts is 10 times the power as 105 amps at 12 volts. 1200 watt amp needs 100 amps at 12 volts. that being said, the stereo won't be pushing 1200 watts continuously and a 100 or so amp alt should do the trick.

Just get a group 29M deep cycle battery dedicated to running the stereo amp. I can run my 1100rms watt system at moderate to high volumes for 4-6 hrs on one.

watts are watts. and the "audio" output claimed by the the stereo guys has little to do with the power supply that drives the amplifier. just look at the little tag on the bottom to see what it actually draws...

in addition... none of this is running on the alternator... it all runs on the batteries... so take the ac watts required to run all the equipment, run that number up against what the inverter requires in dc watts to produce it ... take that number and put it against the amp hour capacity of the batteries and divide by two and thats how long the system would run with NO charging. and that is likely to be between 1 and 3 hours at 100 % capacity ...

a 100 amp alternator, at, probably, 2000 rpm would keep those batteries charged until the end of time if he ran the thing loud enough for me to hear him from here , non stop.

I have a charger, but really to keep a charge on the batteries for long periods of no use.. I have the promariner 20A, 3 bank charger since I'm wanting to add a 3rd battery because of the stereo upgrades

I need a new battery.. My number 2 is trashed.. Won't hold a charge.. Got to look into a good deep cycle...

My comment was based on if he would be playing the stereo all day draining 1 or 2 batteries then using the 3 to start the boat. If he is wired to run on "all" batteries then I would think at start-up charging 2 low batteries could load the alternator pretty good. But I could be wrong???
