Underwater LEDs..how far under do you mount them?
 

I have a buddy with them 6-8 inched under, but to me i think they need to be deeper.

but can you go to deep and not see them at all?

I have 4 Ocean LED A3's coming in Warm White (yellow tint). thinking right at the bottom of the out drives on both sides.?

or is that to low?

Check with Ocean LED and they will recommend a range that they should be mounted for OPTIMAL performance... Keep in mind that most of the underwater LEDs need to be cooled by the water to work properly. If you mount them too close to the surface and they aren't being at least splashed by cold water when the boat is on-plane, they might overheat and shut-down temporarily.

Also, keep in mind that the deeper you mount them, the smaller your radius of illumination will be (both on & off plane) and mounting them below your drives might create undesirable shadows. Ocean LEDs are of very good quality, but you want to make sure that you don't negate that quality by not mounting them in the best possible place on your transom. Good luck, I'm sure you will love them!

The most correct answer here is based on wether you want to show off your lights (mount them high).

- or you wish to illuminate the bottom or beach below the stern of the boat- mount them low.

I beach the nose and swim behind the boat all the time so lower was better for me. I want to see the bottom.

they said 8 inches on the website, but on the phoen a sales guy said he likes them low as possible, for a better glow.. but I am in dirty water...

I want to have a nice GLOW around the back of the boat, so you dont hit the drives/props/ and tabs.

But i want it to look pimp sitting there. too haha. dont need to see the Bottom persay. becasue i am notmally anchored in waste deep water anyway.

Here's some pics of mine mounted to the back of the drives. I haven't been in the water yet but being able to"point" them by turning or trimming my drives intrigued me. they'll probably be considered too high while running but consistent with another thread here I believe running with them on especially if they shine back will probably get you a stop at night. On the other hand they should light the roost pretty well. Won't be long before I know for sure.

Just hold them at different depths to get your best show, then mount them.

Well thy say DO NOT put them underwater until they are mounted, cause it voids the warranty... not sure why though..... and I am not close to the river to put in the water with a lead going to a random 12vlt battery.... other wise I probalby would test it.
