Best Flame Arrestors, or K&N?

Looking to replace my stock flame arrestors, looking for info or links to good deals. Would also buy used if available. 4150 carb, no more that 41/2" overall tall. Don't want to spend a ton. Also what about doing K&N instead, any positives or negatives there? Much cheaper, and you get filtration. Saw on a VERY old thread they didnt drop any power on the dyno, correct? Only bad thing I see going that way is that I tend to have to lean on them a lot due to limited room in the engine bay, may not be a strong as a nice flame arrestor.

Im assuming you know that flame arrestors are mandatory.

I have Tall K&N's on mine. They work great and look good too. If i have to lean over the motors I just pull them off and throw a towel over the carb.

I am assuming he is referring to the K&N marine air filter, which is also an approved flame arrestor. Thought about going that route myself, but can't justify the expense for zero gain on a 496HO.

Yeah IDK, personally I dont really get the idea or rule well I do but you know what I mean. Not so sure the CG or a local cop would look or even knows what to look for.

I just bought the 14" diameter x 5" tall K&N flame arrestor that is USCG approved. I also found a velocity stack base to replace the K&N base.

Yes, I was referring to the K&N Marine Filters/Arrestors

I just recieved a holley 720-13 from jegs today for my 4150 for 105 shipped. It is made for holley by Barbron Fairhaven Mi sae and iso certified. It is 4x8 for tight areas and is very well made.Jegs will match Summits price I think they were 3 dollars cheaper online.

They may not, but your insurance adjuster knows the difference.

Just ordered a set of 14x3 K&N, for the price they are worth a try. They are 4.65" overall with the flange, so should just fit I hope lol. Wish I had room to go bigger, prefer the look of a smaller diameter/tall filter but not in the cards for me.

I'm running a 14" x 4 usg filter with a 1/14 drop base I have no room

My current setup has vent hose running to the valve cover? or vise versa Is that a coast guard saftey requirement or a performance enhancement?

ThisIsLivin 05-02-2012 08:02 AM

You need to be careful about the smaller flame arrestors, they don't flow much air. I called K&N and their 9" units don't flow enough air for my motor. I have a big cam and a 2.5 powervalve, a poor flowing flame arrestor will cause the power valve to close.

Not a requirement, but it is a good idea. It helps pull vapors, moisture and even a little negative pressure in the crankcase.

So who has the best polished flame arrester for the money. I need a set up for dual holly 4150' Is it Hardin? Teague? CP Performance? Or does someone else offer the best for the price.
