Air in hydraulic steering
Help.......I put a single ram full hydraulic system on my boat and can't get the air to bleed out. I've spent hrs trying!! When the motor is OFF, I can't push ram out, solid. When pushing the ram in goes 1.5" and feels mushy, air! I've tried bleeding when running, when off. Many many many times.....it's getting old fast!
Any thots or ideas?? Thnx |
i just did mine also and bled it out by slowly moving steering lock to lock about 10 times, making sure the fluid is always full, sometimes you may have to crack open the hydraulic lines on the ram while turning to get the rest out

I followed what an Imco tech told me and it worked well. Find a large hose (maybe an old radiator hose) that fits snugly over the power steering bung. Cut about a 5" section off and slip it on the bung then fill it up with power steering fluid. Turn it lock to lock and repeat until all the air is out. No need to crack fittings. I believe I did this with the motor running. BTW mine is an imco dual ram system.
