454 425hp Ignition Timing??

Setting up a 454 ho 425 crate motor in a project. It has been completely marinized and had the cam swapped for a marine grind. Should be 425-450hp.....

Anyway, looking for a base timing set point. It has been a good while since I have done this. Soooooo......help is appreciated.

INstalled NGK bpr6fs plugs, gap at .038 does that sound right?

I'm by no mean an expert on this, but I think you're going to be told to set the timing at full advance. That's how I've set mine in the past. At full advance I'm at at 36 degrees. What cam are you running?

12-14 at idle,34 at 3500 and above more timing might give alittle more power but might cause problems if fuel goes stale

Also what ignition module are you using, that's a very important factor as the amount of advance varies from model to model.

Timing at total advance should be set to around 34*. Base timing at idle will depend on what ignition and module you are using.

This particular engine has a crane .553/.587 lift 214/226 duration @ .050 112 lobe sep

Are you running a MSD 6AL box? I am looking for the similar answers to your question as well.

My cam however is slightly different .608/.618 lift 236/239 w/a 114 lobe.(rough #'s, misplaced my cam card for now)
I was told by others ~9 @ idle(900rpm) and ~36 @ 3000rpm. I have a MSD Pro distributor(no vacuum) and the engine builder took the springs out of it and pretty much locked it at full advance. It seems to run decent on the hose, but I'm still questioning removing the springs.

Today I'll find out, gonna give it a test run....

Stock merc ignition on this one.

34 degrees at 3000rpm

Ok, next question....how do you do that? I guess I have to do it in the water at the dock. I am not sure about anything more than idle speed on the hose.
