Starving for fuel
 

So the 540's are refreshed and the intercoolers are in and we now have about 850 + hp. The standard carter mechanical fuel pump can't keep up. We have a back up electric fuel pump but don't know yet if that will help eliminate the fuel problem. Do most guys change to the bigger fuel pump for 1000 hp+ or will my Carter's get the job done? It has only run on the dyno so far but the fuel flow chart is somewhat erratic on the first engine. What's up?

Any idea how many gallons per hour the pump can flow ? I figure at 850 hp you probably need around 85 gals per hour at a slightly rich .6 bsf. At 1000 hp you will need around 100 gals per hour.

I dont think the stock type pumps are anywhere near those numbers. Even the performance mechanical pumps are usually around 130 if I remember correctly. And those numbers are probably under ideal conditions. The electric pump should help feed the mechanical pump.

You also need to be concerned with the plumbing size.

Not sure what Carter pumps you have, but maybe the stock merc sea pump unit?? If so, they have tiny inlet and outlets, I think they are like 1/4" pipe.

You may want to step it up to a CV products pump, they make one that fits the sea pump unit. They are pricey, but.......

The pumps I plan to use are Holley 6 valve pumps with 1/2"NPT in/out. I have several buddies running those style pumps of roots blown deals with good luck.

Imo, 1/4"NPT isnt enough, especially on the suction side of the pump.

The stock carters are only 42 gph What I do is buy a 130gph holley marine pump and take the two apart and put the holley bottom half on the cater pump so you can still run it on the sea pump or you can spend 200.00 on the KE half pump witch is no diffrent than what I do with the holley pump half that only cost 115 bucks or you can use a 130gph small block pump

Buy the CV pumps.
