Left my lower unit @ bottom of lake!

Looking for a lower with the side pickups. Are all newer ones interchangable with my upper? '94 Bravo

excaleagle42 06-30-2002 10:22 PM

jerry
sorry, i don't have a lead on a lower but i have to ask; what happened to the lower you had? a sea monster take it? ;) and did ya ever fix that head gasket?
Fran

Sydwayz 06-30-2002 10:39 PM

Do you have anything left of the internals? I will admit I do not know much about drives, but there is a new lower case only (SWP) at the Marina where Eric & I keep our boats at; for $600.
Sorry to hear of the troubles.

CheckmateF1 06-30-2002 10:44 PM

Jerry,

Your luck sounds like mine! What the hell happend?

Eric

US1 Fountain 07-01-2002 12:33 AM

Sydwayz,
Only thing left is the verticle shaft. Nothing below it. I am hoping to find a complete lower to have by Wed. Can't miss out on the 4th. Got alot of calls to make in the morning.

Eric,
I thought I found my problem to the loss of speed. It was the outdrive thingy hanging down in the water creating drag. Figured if I could go around 60mph and hit a rock..... Now I have no drag, and no speed. Damnit I just can't figure this boating chit out! I'm hoping with the quick amputation, that the upper is ok. I didn't see any damage from under the top cap or on the gimble.

All I got to say is it could have been really bad. 1st thing I did was raise the hatch to look for water rushing in. Not a drop.

Did see a Scarab at the ramp with a complete drive hanging by the hyd. trim lines. His gimble and housing is really busted up. Now he had a bad day.
Any progress?

ex42,
Yeah, I welded the heads and the block together. :) No, just letting it weep for now. Will fix it this winter. I did do a leak down and comp test. Came thru with better than new flying colors. Going to run it, just ain't going anywhere! :D :D

CheckmateF1 07-01-2002 09:32 AM

LOL!

Jerry, talk about a shortie lower case!! Too bad there is no room left to mount the prop.

Im glad there was no damage to you or the hull.

Yesterday was the 1st trip to the water in 3 months that I didn't have to open the hatch. :D Still disappointing, but better, it ran 73.8gps @ 5200. Same labbed 26 Hydro. I do know that it is running healthy as far as timing and air/fuel. Plugs are a perfect orangish/tan. I'll do a compression test again to see if #5 is still low. If so I'll fix it in the fall and maybe have Rod Dash do some head work.

talk soon! Eric

US1-somewhere along the way Merc added a oil passage to the bravo. If you want to mate a new unit with a older one you can plug the passage. Honestly though, the passage was added as a upgrade and offers improved oiling, so I'd try to utilize it.

I feel your pain...

Jerry,

Sorry to hear the news. I know exactly how you feel - I found a submerged stump last year and did basically what the guy in the Scarab did - drive was barely hanging on, would have sunk the boat if the bilge pump had not kept up. Surely someone on the board can get a new drive out to you. You might try Chris Martin at SterndriveSpec - he usually has one laying around, and he is a good guy to deal with.

Hope your luck changes!

What the F##K,

Are we giving out awards for who has the most problems? If so I think you just took the lead.

Actually I stoled the bottom half of your drive. I forgot the rusty shaft is in the top half. I'll trade ya.

One gallon of Gateraid and whole day of cussin later I got my new cable in. Thank God it was just the cable. I'm getting to old for this!

I hope your luck turns around soon Bro! I'll ask around about the drive.

Talk to ya soon.

I need to take a survey... Did you Jerry do the boat naming ceromony for the boating gods when naming your boat. Last boat I had before current boat I followed all the ceromony guidelines. 954 hours later I sold her last weekend. Ran the **** out of it, never a prob. This boat I bought last year... 2 motors and one outdrive (kinda), and $10k later later, she's starting to come around. Gonna put a new name on this weekend and will be breakin out the wine for the launch. Better than the whine from me being pissed all the time cause my boat is broke... again.

Anyway... good luck Jerry. Hope you are up and runnin soon.

Thanks all. I have been in contact with insurance and a dealership all day. Now that time has past, I have decided it best just to take it slow and have the upper torn down and inspected along with the whole transom assembly on the advise of the Merc dealership. I don't want to spend $3800 for a new lower only to have it get ruined by the upper only so that I can be on the water this weekend. It will all be taken care of and properly.

Merlin, thank you very much for the offer. Greatly appreciated. Boat is going in Fri for the estimate. Not how I wanted to spend the holiday weekend thu.

How and were do these prices come from? I was just told today by a Merc dealer that just a new lower alone is that much. I sure would hate to pay $3200 for just a lower when I can buy the whole thing for the same amount of money and not mess with having the upper checked out, providing these are brand new straight from Mercury Marine and not rebuilts from sunkin boats and sold as new. Doesn't Merc them selves have guidlines that dealers have to abide by as far as what they can charge? I can see a few bucks variation, but not a couple thousand! Thanks

candyman35 07-02-2002 12:17 AM

Jerry,
I e-mailed you my number. I may have a good deal for you. I'll find the link to the boat re-naming ceremony. Bad things can happen if you don't do it properly, ask MIdnightRider.

The Bravo prices are all over the place. If you keep shopping you'll always find a better price. $3,200.00 sounds like a great price. When I was searching the best I could find was $3,800.00.

Dan

CheckmateF1 07-02-2002 07:46 AM

Jerry, I paid $3200 for my complete 2001 that I just got. It's a BravoHp w/low water pickup. Came with a 1year warranty too. I don't think he has any left but I got it from Offshore Performance in Grasonville, Md. I can check with him to see if he has anymore if you want.

I didn't really want the LWP but beggers can't be choosers!

Eric
