Blower belt questions

I`ve got 671`s with Superchillers and the belts are rather long and are becoming a pain in the butt to keep in check.

My idler/tensioner pulley is pushing on the outside of the belt and seems to loosen under hard running. I see many that have the idler on the inside of the belt pushing outward.

What works best??

Thanks, Kurt.

Kurt, we have used both ways. The idler should be on the slack side of the belt, not the tension side.

Let me ad another Question:D

How tight should they be ? Mine seem awful loose but they are both that way and they work.....A couple of inches slack in them.

As the engine warms up the belts will get tighter, so check them hot. I run them with 0 slack, no tension but no slack. You can double check by turning the blower pulley, there should be no movement. Try loosening and tightning the belt until you get a feel for it. Too loose will actually increase the side load on the shafts due to the tooth profile, too tight will break something as the belts have 0 give in them.

Thanks Marc........

Mine must be WAY loose....I will adjust them!!!!

I just got back in from running the belts with the tensioner pushing outward and could not believe how much louder the belt whine was as opposed to the tensioner pushing inward.
Is it because of the toothed belt/smooth pulley?

Thanks for the input,

Kurt.

That would make sense, I never did a back to back test.
