Best large oil filter?
Fram HP6A
Wix 51222R Wix 57003R K&N 5001 There is not much info or comparisons on the larger filters, only the 1 quart sizes. Normally, I would lean towards the Wix, but there is no Micron rating on their site. Fram seems to have made some improvements with the HP6A. K&N looks good, but the bypass is a lower 11-17 psi. What's the best filter from the list above? |

Thanks, but this is just the extended version of their small filter.

My experience and the information on the larger high performance and racing filters listed shows they were develeped to allow larger volumes of oil to be filtered while still providing higher flow volume that can be required in certain oil and sump systems on higher horspower engines where heat builds more quickly in the oil, the oil lines are also larger in size and the oil coolers are alos much larger and the filter has to have a higher volume with less restriction form a larger filter media in square inches to keep these higher flows from either being restricted or by-passed from filtering.
Most of these filters have a much heavier duty construction inside and out than the standard automotive and standard marine engine filters and I doubt you would see issues from any of them and only variances will be the micron size filtering specification and filter media flow rate at certain pressures. Maybe someone here on OSO like Smitty has some spec. comparisons on them and can share that data. My bottom line is I think any listed will do a fine job properly applied and there are just to many other items on your engine and boat that should garner more attention than these comparisons. I hope if someone has had real significant failure, damage or proof of something different from one of these specific part numbers, then please share that here. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
Ill be using Wix 51794R this year and was using the wix 51061R previous years. The 51794 is 2.5 inches longer, not sure if it will make a difference or be any better but they get changed every year so ill give it a go.
