Speedo tube won't stay on?
I'm having problems keeping the speedo tube on my new Baja 36 Outlaw.
The tube blew off the plastic fitting on the outdrive during the first dealer water test around 69mph. They double clamped it back on I ran around all weekend in the low to mid 60's with no problem. Made one full trottle run Sunday and it blew off again around 70mph. Where do you guys think the real problem is? Wrong clamps? Bad plastic fitting in the drive? Problem forward with tube or speedometer? Everything works great until you hit the 70MPH mark? Would like to fix it one last time, the right way. Any suggestions are appreciated. Mark |
They are garbage to begin with. Go GPS.

Hey Boss,
This also happened to me repeatedly right at around 55(indicated). I would put it on, only to fall off again... Final solution: I put a small tie-wrap around the tube on the little fitting in the drive...problem solved, hasn't blown off in over a year. |
Another thing that works is shrink tubing. cut small lengths (about 3/8 inch long) and put them over the tube after it is installed on the barb and then shrink it. I do two layers.

Thanks Guys,
I will try the tie wrap first. I agree, the GPS is the way to go. I need to check and see if they offer a Monster series speedo in the GPS style. Mark |
shrink wrap is the only reliable fix. Make sure you use a short piece that does not go past the hose barb, or else it will shrink the tubing closed and the speedo wont work. Use the thick kind of shrink, not the cheap thin pvc stuff.

Rob,
The boat is running GREAT. Other that the speedo thing no problems. The Grin is permanently afixed. I have not got any GPS numbers yet. During the run when the speedo tube came off we were running with a friend that has a 38 Fountain sprot cruiser with GPS speedo. He was at 68 MPH on GPS and we were blasting by him pretty quickly. eliminator219, Yeah, 69 is a good place to be. I should have named the boat "Go N 69". Thanks guys. |
