changing exhaust, what shifter bracket is needed?
I'm changing my exhaust on my 502 from the fractory cast iron exhaust to the mercruiser/ gill alum center rise exhaust. On my iron set up the shifter mechanism was bolted to the exhaust itself. On the new exhaust system I need the shifter bracket adaptor.
Is shifter barcket part number 8M0052632 the correct bracket? Thanks |
You can just screw the shifter bracket to the transom.

the 70's version had a bracket stuck up from the top 2 flywheel cover bolts. mounted right behind distributor. would be easy to make and probably could be found on ebay. similar location to griff's pic above. although griff's location makes more sense. if you have to mess with the engine, why mess with shift cables and risk changing adjustments? it was mounted to exhaust for convenience of the factory installation.

Griff, I'm not familiar with the cable routing, didn't totally get the way all three cables interacted. Got it now, thanks.
