Draining your oil
So I've been sucking the oil out of my boats for years through the dipstick, and I've never liked it. I'd like to drain it out of the pan and run it out of the transom drain. Can anyone recommend a reliable valve that I can install on the pan with a "nipple" or similar fitting that I could reach down and attach a hose small enough to route out the transom???
|
This is what I plan on using:

Do a search. It's been discussed on here many, many times. Mercury makes a kit for it.

I just pulled the drain plugs, attached a 90* fitting put some hose on it, ran it up front witha small brass plug/cleanout on the end of the hose. When it's oil change time I just hook a drill pump up to it and it pumps it out in about 3 minutes.
The only thing that sucked was that it sucked shimmying under the engines to put the fitting in. |

I have Fumoto drain valves in everything except the boat, haven't got that far yet. They work great as long as the oil is warm, otherwise it's a slow drain. Positive lock when closed too! They do have a model with a nipple on it. I put a vaccuum cap on it to keep it clean.

This is what I just put in my boat a little slow, but faster than siphon and a whole lot easier. Pull the drain plug. pull out the hose, let it drain in pan and walk away.

I went one step farther....I bought the hose and 90 deg fitting that fit where the oil pan drain plug went. I then ran this hose to a bulkhead mounted electric oil pump I picked up at West Marine. Wired it to the electrical system and now have a built in oil removal pump.
Now all I have to do is turn on the battery, open a quarter turn valve on the pump assembly and route the output hose to an appropriate container, and turn the pump on. Sucks it all out. Having the oil warm makes it go much faster. |

Fair warning, some of those are too big for the hull drain hole. I use a second piece of hose that has a fitting with a smaller OD and put it through the drain hole from the outside. Then screw the two together.

I bought the CP kits when I upgraded my 575's... funny thing was that those POS kits didn't fit through the garboard drains... I even added two separate garboards for them.
|
The Yanmars have the dipstick tube attached to the drain plug hole from the factory so I just suck it out of the tube with a big vacuum pump. I would imagine it wouldn't be that hard to adapt the yanmar tube to another motors drain plug with the proper fittings. I have 6LP's in case you want to look up the part at a yanmar dealer.

Second and third that one!!!
Bought the exact same ones, will not fit my drain plugs Merc ones are a lot smaller hose/fitting, but I could never locate the Merc ones as they stopped doing that. They work fine in theory, but my answer to oil changes was this. It works great on all fluids!!! Cars, trucks, lawn equipement etc. http://www.amazon.com/MityVac-7300-P...im_sbs_auto_26

I bought the cp
Performance ones too. Won't fit the drain hole. So i chopped off their end, and installed a barbed 3/8" fitting with a plug. That fits fine. And I have it pulled up next to the steering assembly and bracketed to the transom. Can't leak ever if it's 12" above the engine when not it use |
we sell the MPI motor oil drain hose kits inwhich is the same set up as CP Perf. but the drain hose fits thru the drain plug hole. Also they swivel at the oil pan drain hole.

I think I'll go this route because of the transom plug size issue. Thanks.
These are mighty trick little pieces. My hope is I can actually get to the one on the boat, since it is also due. I'll suck out what I can, then pull the pan plug and install it. It is going to suck getting it in the first time...but will pay off in the end I hope. |
MnFastBoat has the idea - I use the same vacuum pump, but I have a fitting on the end of mine that screws into the fitting on the hose that attaches to the oil pan drain. I fish the plastic tube from the "oil sucker" up thru the drain hole in the bilge, and then attach it to the hose coming from the pan. Then all I have to do is pump the oil out into the reservoir. It takes maybe 10 minutes to drain it all out, and creates very little mess. I wish I could say the same about the damned oil filter hanging off of that sandwich adapter! I'm working on a solution for that mess as well.

I don't know about you guys, but good luck getting a hose out of my drain plug even if it went thru it !!!!! hudinni could not get down there !

Using my method, I just stick the suction tube through the bilge drain from the outside. The tubing is stiff enough to "aim" it up towards the top of the engine, where it can easily be grabbed and attached to the drain hose coming off the oil pan. Plus, as mentioned, the pump comes in real handy for draining other fluids, like rear ends, transmissions, drive lube and PS reservoirs, etc.

I plan on putting the drain plug line on this weekend. But don't have an oil pump, so how do I get the oil out?
I don't want to drain it in the boat, that would be a brutal mess (and the boat is spotless) I might be able to get a small container under, but getting is out is the hard part (once the oil is in it) Don't want to buy a pump, since I'll never use it again. Any suggestions? P.S. Why merc does not put these on from the factory baffles me! |
Does the Sierra fit a 500HP?? is it s 1/2" 20 thread?
I've ordered this one, but read a post and they say there are two sizes of drain plugs for mercs (old ones and "newer" one)
"This kit is for GM, Chrysler & Most Ford Oil Pans 1/2" -- 20 Thread" http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...classNum=50402 |
For what it's worth, I added the drain hoses to the bottom of the pans on a boat a couple years ago.
One motor was out for rebuild, so we drained the one that was still installed with a vac pump via the dipstick. When we pulled the drainplug, there were only a couple of drops that came out. As long as your dipstick goes down to the bottom of the pan like it should the vacuum pumps get the majority of the oil out of the pan. |
